The Pump Gallery of Flood Fine Arts Center Presents:

Jennifer Brooks

May 1 through May 30 2009

jen brooks opening party

Opening reception Friday, May 1 7-10pm

One of Jennifer Brooks' earliest memories is of an old box camera her grandparents gave her. Even though it wasn't in working order, she loved the feel of it in her hands and would pretend to take photographs. She still loves the feel of a camera and the emotional and artistic connection that it allows her to make with the world.

An Asheville native, Jennifer earned her B.A. from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg in business and economics, but photography was always her first love. One of Jennifer's strongest influences was renowned photographer Debra McClinton, a high school friend. Shortly after Debra's tragic early death, Jennifer was laid off from her job. Profoundly saddened by the loss of her friend and feeling more than ever that life was fragile and precious, Jennifer decided to follow her passion and opened the Jennifer Brooks Photography Studio in the Phil Mechanic building.

Whether she's creating a studio portrait, capturing a live event or designing an abstract image, Jennifer is compelled by the emotions that her photographs convey. Her images often capture a feeling of waiting or stillness, as if "something important is about to happen and this is the moment before." Her greatest joy is the sound of excitement in a client's voice when they discover something special about themselves through her photographs. It is this translation of emotion into a two-dimensional medium that fascinates and inspires her.

From the sparse lonely image of a dining table set for one in In Service to the deep, joyous connection of sisterhood in Sisters to the infectious glee on a young boy's face in Just Like Granddad, Jennifer Brooks' emotionally evocative photographs touch the heart, lift the spirits and stimulate the imagination.
