Asymmetry Operations: New work by David McDermott, Celia Barbieri and Christopher McGee

May 7th through May 31st
Opening: Saturday, May 7th, 7-10pm
Celia Barbieri, Chris McGee, and Dave McDermott are all housed in the Phil Mechanic Studios. Their work, though divergent in method and material, follows a corresponding theme. Their interest is in symmetry, whether that is radial symmetry, of which there is an obvious preoccupation displayed in the ceramic works of Barbieri and McGee, or reflection symmetry which is demonstrated in the acrylic and oil paintings of McDermott. A noticeable ardor for the interconnectedness of forms and patterns which recur in nature and the asymmetric tendencies of organic shapes confirms the cohesiveness of this grouping of work.

Barbieri is a graduate of Warren Wilson College with a degree in both biology and art, with a concentration in ceramics. Barbieri combines her passion for nature and art through her exploration of ‘the circle’ by using kirigami, mandalas, diatoms and seed pods as inspiration. This simple shape represents wholeness and can be seen as the organizational structure of life itself, a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite.
McGee, a 2008 graduate of Warren Wilson with a degree in art with a concentration in ceramics, uses ceramic forms to impart his interest in proportion and ratios in his three-dimensional work. He creates layered lanterns which recall both organic and man-made shapes such as acorns, pagodas, and jellyfish. His inspiration comes from the earth’s resonant frequency and its materials. McGee’s passion is in his lanterns specifically as their illumination represents the universal light within us all.
McDermott feels empowered as he surrenders to the artistic process. His world becomes balanced as he attempts to connect with the divine imagination bringing his mind, body and soul into alignment. Through his work he tries to communicate a sense of power that echoes planetary consciousness. This is seen in the way his work reflects the celestial feminine. McDermott hopes to share the healing experience of his art with the viewer.
