Peter Gentling was born in Rochester, Minnesota and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He currently lives and works in Asheville, North Carolina. He holds a BA from Carleton College, an MD from Northwestern University Medical School, and completed surgical education at the Mayo Clinic in 1969. Gentling was also a Ship's Surgeon on the USS Midway during the Vietnam War and is now a retired Asheville surgeon who is currently focusing on his art career.
Gentling, who comes from a family of artists, incorporated his passion for the arts while perusing his career in medicine. He often drew from his high school biology books or drew for his Human Anatomy students at Northwestern University Medical School. Now Gentling studies his surrounding landscapes and carefully constructed still lives to create musically poetic paintings of light and patterns.
Gentling considers himself to be a "student," but he is far from it. His paintings encompass an array of historically classified styles, such as abstraction, postimpressionism, primitivism, and realism, which gives proof to Gentling's comprehensive knowledge of Art History and his humble approach to his career as an artist.
For more information about Peter Gentling and his paintings, please visit the Pump Gallery or call Renee M. Cagnina at 828.254.2166.

Phil Mechanic Studios promotes art and science in Western North Carolina. Originally a food warehouse built in 1928, the Mechanic building was purchased by Phil Mechanic in the '70's. Today, his son Mitch has opened its doors to a number of Asheville's crafters, along with an exhibition space for local artists called "Pump Gallery." Artists in their studios are currently busy creating new art in the old building - award winning woodworkers, metal workers, glass blowers and potters. BlueRidge Biofuels recently opened the first 100% biodiesel station in Western North Carolina and are currently at work producing biodiesel in the building.
